Human history tells us that covering a body for protection has always been a fundamental characteristic of human beings. My practise stems from the fundamental role that clothing has played in protecting humans for centuries, but it also has the extended role of introducing garments that can transform themselves according to the wearer’s needs and their constant evolving identities. My design’s protective nature and ever-changing ability are rooted in my personal urge to find a transformative, protective space where my sexuality is not assumed because of my profession or where my culture (India) is not labelled as backward due to imagery created by the western media. The shelters I design are not intended for hiding but rather as a portal to self-healing. Zero-waste pattern cutting is an essential element of my designs, which have their roots in Indian clothing and draping systems.
